Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Practice Administrator, the Medical Assistant - Immunizations monitors the health center’s immunization inventory, orders immunizations, administers vaccines to patients and completes data entry. They also assist the provider, as assigned by the Practice Admin or Supervisor, with patient examinations, pre-visit questions, treatments and procedures as directed by the Provider, while maintaining an efficient flow of patients through the clinic.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Greets and welcomes patients. Escorts patient to the appropriate location for pre-examination information gathering.  Documents patient’s stated chief complaint in EMR.
  1. Accurately measures and records patient specific information: height, weight, respiration, pulse, blood pressure, temperature, pulse oximetry (Sp02) and head circumference as appropriate.  Accurately records all measurements and information gathered in patient’s EMR.
  2. Administers medications and injections under provider’s directions and documents in EMR.
  3. Administers immunizations under Provider’s direction, including providing Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) and follow-up. Updates vaccine information in Oklahoma State Immunization Information System (OSIIS) and patient’s EMR accurately.
  4. Orders, receives, and organizes vaccines from the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH).
  5. Maintains an electronic record on the stock of vaccines and records each immunization given. 
  6. Prepares a monthly report of immunization data for the Practice Administrator. Compiles a report for the OSDH.
  7. Verifies immunizations needed according to Oklahoma State Immunization Information System (OSIIS), including providing Vaccine Information Statements (VIS), the patient’s shot record, and the provider.
  1. Monitors and orders immunizations for OSDH.
  2. Keeps work area clean and orderly. Exhibits a professional manner in dress and work habits.
  3. Coordinates at least one immunization event annually as specified in the OSDH contract.
  4. Performing weekly temperature logs and ensures temperatures are within acceptable ranges.
  5. Provides back-up coverage as a Medical Assistant when directed by Practice Administrator as needed.
  1. Reviews assigned Telephone Encounters within the EMR in a timely manner. Seeks assistance from the Medical Assistant Float or Master Float when necessary. 
  2. Prepares and restocks supplies in each examination room(s) daily and swiftly prepares rooms for subsequent patients.
  3. Assists Providers in physical exams and procedures as directed.  Inquiries about any self-referrals, recent ER visits or hospitalizations and requests reports from appropriate sources, documenting all information in the EMR.
  4. Proactively addresses the needs of patients and families in the health center. 
  5. Considers cultural sensitivity and utilizes effective communication skills.
  6. Disposes of contaminated items in accordance with Variety Care policy.
  7. Follows “Universal Precautions” for safety regulations; uses appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as task on hand requires.
  8. Follows the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines and VARIETY CARE policies and procedures as they relate to privacy and confidentiality.
  9. Complies with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommendations for the workplace.
  10. Participates in training programs to improve patient care, such as learning and practicing evidence-based practice approaches to care.
  11. Assists with medical emergencies as directed by Provider.
  12. Supports plan of care and patient education in line with provider’s recommendations.
  13. Qualifications

Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge:

  1. High school graduate or GED.
  1. Must be able to perform MA duties and requirements as assigned.
  1. Demonstrates ability to obtain and record accurate information.
  2. Experience using or willing to learn electronic medical records software.
  3. Intermediate computer skills including data entry and typing.
  4. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information private and in accordance with HIPAA and Variety Care Policy.

 

 

Preferred Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge:

  1. Experience related to immunizations.
  2. Medical Assistant Certificate or LPN License. Previous experience in a medical assistant role may be considered in lieu of a certificate/license.
  3. Experience related to immunizations.
  1. Bilingual (English & Spanish).

 

 

ADA Requirements: 

  1. Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  2. Able to concentrate and prioritize work.
